No more cycling
That Saturday evening, the weather was great. The sun was hiding behind the cloud. It was cool and lovely to be outside the house. So I decided to do some gardening while the children went on with their favourite pastime which is cycling. My autistic son excitedly cycled around the park. Their brothers were far in front of him shouting out loud to him, encouraging him to go faster. He laughed. A real laugh! He was thrilled to be in control.
After half an hour, more people came to the park which is meant for joggers and children who love cycling. A young couple with a two-year old girl sat on a bench. The girl then wandered about all by herself. My son cycled along the path happily when suddenly the girl turned over to look at her parents. At that precise moment, my son lost his balance and as he was about to fall, he accidentally hit the girl.Fortunately, she was not injured. Yet, she cried!Perhaps she was shocked. Her parents however were so mad at my son and shouted abusive words to him.
I wanted to go to his rescue but my husband prevented me. He feared the situation would get worse. All I wanted to do was to apologise to them on my son’s behalf. I wanted to tell them that my son is special and that he has autism.
Today, as I was thinking about what had happened, I realised that the girl’s parents would not be able to understand. They would have not accepted my apology. Their little girl is the most precious being on earth to them. They would blame me and curse my innocent son. They do not know that Allah makes him special for a good reason. They do know that Allah answers the prayer of special people like him.
Many people look down on him. It hurts most when his own blood and flesh took him lightly as if he is not a human being.
Since that Saturday, my son stopped cycling.I don't know what's going on in his mind. He continued doing what he has been doing the past 14 years of his life - looking at cars passing by, watching the birds flying, following the track of the fascinating ants and dreaming.
